Deacon, Phone Home!

August 19, 2004 Posted by John at 10:43 PM

Deacon has gone underground, but will no doubt re-surface soon. In the meantime, I've been occupying spare moments watching the Olympics. One of the great things about the Olympics is that it reminds us of obscure sports that we wouldn't normally follow. I mean, everyone knows that the Twins have a 4 1/2 game lead in the AL Central. But not everyone is up to speed on beach volleyball. Especially, women's beach volleyball.

I've long been aware of volleyball, but I had no idea what a cerebral sport it is. The girl in this photo isn't just adjusting her shorts, she is signalling a play to her teammate:

Yahoo News Photos has a beach volleyball slide show that is quite an eye-opener. The thrill of victory:

And the agony of defeat:

I dunno, there is something to be said for beach volleyball. You can check out the Yahoo News beach volleyball slide show, linked to above, which contains an amazing 194 photos. Surprisingly, a large majority are of the women's competition. I guess I'm not the only one being turned on to new sports via the Olympics.

As I say, Deacon: phone home. As far as I can tell, this beats the heck out of soccer.
