UPDATE: Rangel has "clarified" things with this statement: "I am saying that people's silence when they know terrible things are happening is the same thing as the Holocaust, where everyone would have me believe that no one knew those Jews were killed over there." The move here is first to assert that our government systematically is doing "terrible things" and then to accuse anyone who questions your assertion (or even fails to embrace it) of behaving like a Nazi or some other comparably odious historical villain de jour. The goal is to preempt discussion. This has become a standard part of the "mo' better metaphors" genre, as practiced by the likes of Rutgers professor Alex Hinton who warned that we are starting to resemble the Khmer Rouge in part because we supposedly "turn[] a blind eye to what our government should not be doing."
