Let the apologies resume
Last Monday Stephen Shields wrote Joe Malchow dreaming of the championship final that has come to pass, tonight's UND v. St. Lawrence University hockey game that will cap the Ledyard National Bank tourney in Hanover:
I am feeling terribly slighted, and I am deeply saddened and disappointed. As an alum of St. Lawrence University (recently characterized at NRO by Jonah Goldberg, as, uh, “humorless”), I think it’s important to point out our hockey team name: The Skating Saints! We used to be The Larries, and the mascot had the smiling physiognomy of a slightly Spock/Satan character with a crew cut. Lots going on there.Put this one in the category of answered prayers. If you could point this out to [Dartmouth athletic director] Ms. [Josie] Harper, I’m confident some further outrage could be developed in Hanover. Surely a letter ought to go out from the AD apologizing to the Dartmouth community for inviting a team with a name that is offensive to sinners. We could use the exposure in the Globe and AP, good for recruiting you know.
Also, imagine (I know I do) a Saints v. Sioux final on December 30th. We’d have (martyred) Christianists taking on indigenous peoples. Andrew Sullivan could drop the puck for the first face-off. And, of course, re: the BU Terriers, the NH PETA folks might be encouraged to weigh in.
