Today’s Washington Post op-ed section includes a bit of false advertising. Zbigniew Brzezinski’s piece is called “Why Unity Is Essential.” But Zbig never even attempts to explain why unity with France and Germany is essential, or even important, in the context of dealing with Iraq. Instead he simply assumes that unity is essential and lays the blame for its absence solely on President Bush. He also calls for more months of inspections so that the U.N. can “establish more clearly whether Iraq is grudgingly complying or deliberately evading.” Brzezinski does not share with us his basis for thinking that Saddam Hussein might be grudgingly complying. It’s no coincidence that this guy was the National Security Adviser during the low-point in the history of American foreign policy.
