President Bush on the Future of the Middle East

I haven’t yet seen the complete text of President Bush’s speech on Iraq, but here are excerpts released by the White House.
We have been saying for some time that the Administration must pursue, and is pursuing, a bold vision: the liberation of the Arab world. Nothing less is required, in my view, to assure a reasonable level of security against terrorism.
President Bush’s speech today made that case in the context of the war in Iraq:
“The world has a clear interest in the spread of democratic values, because stable and free nations do not breed the ideologies of murder; they encourage the peaceful pursuit of a better life. And there are hopeful signs of the desire for freedom in the Middle East — And from Morocco to Bahrain and beyond, nations are taking genuine steps toward political reform. A new regime in Iraq would serve as a dramatic and inspiring example of freedom to other nations of the region.”
Obviously, reforming the corrupt and tyrannical Arab world is a tall order. But it has to be done, and we may as well get started.
