My daughter is a junior at Walt Whitman High School, an upscale public school in Bethesda, Maryland. Yesterday, she shocked me by reporting that she is the only student in her first period class who stands and recites the Pledge of Allegiance. She has spoken to her friends about why very few of them recite the Pledge. Three main reasons are cited. First, school starts early, and kids don’t feel like standing up. Second, Bush is evil and the U.S. is pretty bad too. Third, with hardly anyone else standing, some feel uncomfortable doing so.
I would add one other reason: a misguided education at home and at school.
