Investor’s Business Daily on the easy Senate passage (72-26) of President Bush’s proposal to restrict large class actions to federal court. The legislation will limit the ability of plaintiffs’ lawyers to “shop” for highly favorable state courts in which to try such cases. This is only the first, and least controversial, of President Bush’s package of tort reform proposals. The other components involve medical and asbestos liability reform.
The president has set out an extraordinarily ambitious domestic agenda. I’m skeptical that he can deliver social security reform and even more skeptical about his prospects for success when it comes to immigration and tax code reform. Major tort reform strikes me as for more doable, and Bush is off to a fast start.
