All that jazz

Whitney Balliett was the New Yorker’s long time jazz columnist; he wrote his column for the New Yorker from 1957 to 2001. When he died yesterday, Terry Teachout immediately took the occasion to express his admiration for Balliett as a writer and “great appreciator.” Teachout posted his tribute to Balliett here on his blog About Last Night. Teachout is Commentary’s regular music critic and the Wall Street Journal’s regular theater critic.
The New Yorker has acknowledged Balliett’s death by posting his 1961 article on Sonny Rollins’s sabbatical and his 1970 profile of Bobby Short.
