Shocking Violence in Copenhagen
The current level of crime through much of Europe is disorienting to those of us who grew up with the idea of western Europe as a placid, almost violence-free area. Copenhagen has been experiencing riots and demonstrations over the last couple of days, ostensibly arising from the demolition, six months ago, of a shelter for "anarchists." Last night, the demonstrations turned violent, as this Associated Press video shows. (The ad that precedes the news footage is very short,)
The Copenhagen Post, which is accessible on the Power Line News site, reports:
For the third time in less than a year, residents of the Nørrebro neighbourhood spent a night watching a riot erupt outside their homes Saturday. The dramatic events unfolded after police responded to reports of fires being lit in the streets by anarchists attending a rally commemorating the six-month anniversary of the demolition of the Ungdomshuset youth centre, their former gathering place.
As police clad in riot gear moved in on the group of 1000 protestors gathered at the intersection of the Nørrebrogade high street and Jagtvej road, an all-too-familiar pattern emerged: a salvo of tear gas fired to disperse the crowd was met with a hail of cobblestones. The ensuing wave of violence left shops along Nørrebrogade with shattered windows, blackened facades and looted shelves.
Police report that while Saturday’s riots were restricted to Nørrebro, they were just as intense as those this March, which flared up in several places around the city.
‘They were no less organised,’ chief inspector Per Larsen said.
About 60 demonstrators were arrested during the demonstrations, but by Sunday morning, only three, who had been charged with assaulting a police officer, remained in custody.
Three arrests are nowhere near enough. Meanwhile, the cultural decline continues, as the Copenhagen Post also reports on a decision by Copenhagen's city government to create "health rooms" where drug addicts can inject methadone in peace. The move is intended to address problems in "Copenhagen’s Vesterbro neighbourhood [which] is littered with thousands of syringes that addicts discard in alleyways and entryways."
The AP video is via Breitbart TV.
