A Warrior for the Cause

I was struck by the contrast between two things I saw today. The first was at The Corner, where Mark Steyn quoted this depressingly accurate assessment:

Whenever the centre-right wins an election, the centre-left allows that its opponents have the office, but denies they have the mandate. They can govern for a term, yes, but only by consensus, not according to their own lights… The amazing thing isn’t that the centre-left makes this declaration — why shouldn’t it? — but that the centre-right often believes it, or acts as if it did. Majority or minority, Tories tend to govern apologetically, as if they were caretaker governments, probationary constables, relief politicians holding the fort until the real politicians catch their breath and return for the next spell of legitimate centre-left governance. …
Simply put, the centre-left feels entitled to govern; the centre-right doesn’t. It was instructive, and scary, to watch America’s President open a new chapter of regulatory statism in his Wall Street ululation this week. Obama was cooking, laying down the law with entitlement oozing from every pore, in a dazzling, born-to-govern performance.

Sad but true. Why have so many conservatives historically lacked the confident, aggressive mindset that is necessary for political success? I don’t know. But an antidote, or part of one, anyway, is at hand, in the form of Andrew Breitbart.
We’ve written about Andrew’s projects before. He was once associated with the Drudge Report and maybe still is, I’m not sure. He is the proprietor of Breitbart.com and Big Hollywood. His most recent venture is Big Government, which debuted with one of the biggest splashes in the history of the internet, the ACORN videos produced by James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles. I’m not certain whether Andrew collaborated with them from the beginning or whether they brought the videos to him after the fact, but I’m pretty sure it was Andrew’s promotional genius that lies behind the slow, drip-drip release of the videos, which has brought Congressional support for ACORN to its knees. In any event, this was the most effective guerrilla conservative effort in recent years.
Andrew is fearless and aggressive. A combative conservative, he doesn’t understand why we shouldn’t be proud of our beliefs and committed to victory. Nor do I. At PJTV, you can see Glenn Reynolds interviewing Andrew after they both participated in a tea party protest in Quincy, Illinois. It conveys a good idea of what Andrew is all about. You may have to register, but it’s well worth it. PJTV is one of the most effective new media organizations, maybe the best.

It’s time for conservatives–mainstream Americans, in other words–to throw off the shackles and get aggressive. Our beliefs are correct, our values are the foundation of any society that doesn’t have a death wish, and our interests, unlike those of the leftists, are legitimate. We deserve to govern this country, and before long, we will.
